Removing Red Eye

Removing Red Eye

Summary:
We all know the common annoyance of when someone takes a photo with their camera, only later to find that the person or subject has these red eyes that look like they are possessed by the devil. Well, in this tutorial, we will walk through an easy process of using Photoshop to get rid of these red eyes and make them look normal again.

Step-By-Step Instructions:
1. Open the photo that has red-eye in Photoshop.

2. Zoom in on both of the eyes in the photograph.

3. Double click the "Quick Mask Mode" button. This will bring up the "Quick Mask Options" pop-up. Be sure to click the color box and change the color from default red to a different color (eg. blue or green). Click OK to close the pop-up.

4. After the pop-up closes, make sure that the "Quick Mask Mode" button is still selected.

4. Select the "Paint Brush" tool and make sure black is the foreground color.

5. Paint over the red area on both eyes. When you have paint in "Quick Mask Mode", it will be a transparent color (in this case, the color will be what you chose in step 3).

6. Once you have painted over both eyes. Click the "Edit in Standard Mode" button.

7. Goto Select > Inverse.

8. You should now have only the pupils selected as in the image below:

9. Next goto Image > Adjustments > Hue/Saturation.

10. When the Hue/Saturation pop-up appears, adjust the Saturation slider all the way to the left to remove the red. If needed, also adjust the Lightness slider to the left to darken the eyes.

11. You should now have removed the red from the eye.

12. Next, zoom in on each eye and use the Paint Brush tool to color in black for the pupils of the eyes. Make sure not to paint over any highlights that are on the pupil (paint around these).

13. The red eye should be completely eliminated from the photo.

14. Now all you need is a way to show off your photo.
